Delivery Addresses in Damascus: Landmarks, Not Street Numbers

1 min read

Damascus runs on landmarks. How to write an address a driver can find — area, landmark, building, floor — with notes on the Old City, planned suburbs and Rif Dimashq.

Ask a Damascene for their address and you will hear "Mazzeh, by Al-Akram Mosque, the building with the bakery underneath". That is exactly right — it just needs to be written in order.

The order that works

  • Area: Mazzeh, Shaalan, Jaramana…
  • Section, if the area is large: Mazzeh Villas, New Zahira, a numbered block in Dahiyat Qudsaya.
  • Nearest landmark: a mosque, school, pharmacy, bakery or roundabout.
  • Building: its name, colour or the shop underneath.
  • Floor and side.

Special cases

  • Old Damascus:** most lanes are motorbike-only; give the nearest gate (Bab Touma, Bab Sharqi) and the lane.
  • Planned suburbs (Mashrou Dummar, Dahiyat Qudsaya): the block or tower number matters most.
  • New buildings in Sahnaya: save a map pin with the address.

One more thing

Keep your phone nearby. A thirty-second call fixes what fifteen minutes of searching will not.
