How Delivery Coverage Works Across Syrian Cities
2 min read
Why delivery coverage in Syria is built neighbourhood by neighbourhood rather than city-wide, and how to tell whether your area is served.
Coverage is a neighbourhood property
It surprises people that a shop in central Damascus may not deliver to another part of Damascus. But coverage is not drawn at the city boundary — it is drawn at the area level, by each shop, based on where it can deliver in a time that leaves the product in good condition.
What determines a shop's radius
- Travel time, not distance. Two kilometres across a congested corridor takes longer than five on an open route, and the food does not care which.
- Time of day. Some shops contract their coverage during peak hours precisely so that the orders they do accept arrive on time.
- Product type. Hot food has a much tighter window than flowers, groceries or pharmacy items, so coverage for those verticals is typically wider.
Finding out whether you are covered
Each area has its own page listing the shops that deliver there — and only those. If the page has shops, you are covered. If it is empty, coverage has not reached that area yet. Coverage expands as shops and drivers join in a given neighbourhood, so an empty area today is not a permanent answer.
Addressing, because Syria has no postcodes
There is no national street-and-number addressing system to lean on, and no postal codes. The descriptive part of your address is doing all the work, so make it carry:
- Area, precisely.
- Nearest recognisable landmark.
- Building name, colour, or the ground-floor shop; plus floor and flat.
- A driver note for anything non-obvious — a rear entrance, a broken bell, a gate code.
A phone number you will actually answer is part of the address, functionally. When a driver cannot find a building, a thirty-second call resolves what fifteen minutes of circling will not.
Across the governorates
The same mechanics apply in Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Latakia, Tartus and the rest: coverage is assembled area by area rather than switched on city-wide. Density follows the shops — neighbourhoods with a concentration of restaurants and groceries reach useful coverage first, and residential areas fill in behind them.
