Ordering Food Delivery in Syria: A Practical Guide

3 min read

How online delivery works in Syria — choosing your area, browsing local shops, cash on delivery, and tracking an order from confirmation to your door.

Start with your area, not the city

The first thing any Syrian delivery service asks for is your area — Mazzeh, Shaalan, Abu Rummaneh, Aleppo Jdeideh. This is not a formality. Coverage is built area by area, because a restaurant that reaches one neighbourhood in fifteen minutes may not reach another at all. Setting your area filters the catalogue down to shops that genuinely deliver to you, which saves you from filling a basket only to find there is no coverage.

Browsing

Shops are grouped by vertical — restaurants, groceries, pharmacies, flowers. Within a vertical you can sort by delivery time or by rating. Ratings here carry real signal: they are dominated by whether the order arrived complete and on time, which are the two things that actually go wrong.

Building an order

  • Check the options. Many items have size, extras or temperature choices. Set them before adding to the basket rather than writing them in the notes.
  • Watch the minimum. Some shops have a minimum order value; the basket tells you when you are under it.
  • Read the item description. Portion sizes vary widely between shops and are usually described rather than standardised.

Checkout

Three things matter at checkout:

  • Your address. Syria has no standardised street-and-number addressing, so the descriptive part does the work. See the note below.
  • Payment. Cash on delivery is the norm. You pay the driver when the order arrives, after you have seen it.
  • Change. If you will be paying with a large note, declare it. Drivers do not carry large amounts of cash, and declaring the note lets them prepare change before setting off.

Writing an address that works

This is the single biggest cause of delayed deliveries, and it is entirely within your control. A usable Syrian address has four parts:

  • The area, precisely.
  • The nearest landmark — a mosque, school, pharmacy, or roundabout.
  • The building: its name, colour, or the shop on its ground floor, plus floor and flat number.
  • A note for the driver if the entrance is hard to find or the doorbell does not work.

"Mazzeh, building 12" is not an address — there are dozens. "Mazzeh Eastern Villas, behind Al-Nour Pharmacy, white building facing the park, 3rd floor, flat 6" is.

Tracking

An order moves through clear stages: pending with the shop, preparing, on the way once a driver collects it, and delivered. The current stage is visible at any time from your orders page, so you know whether a delay is the kitchen or the road.

Timing

Peak hours are roughly 1–3pm and 7–10pm, plus Fridays and public holidays. Preparation times stretch during those windows. If you are ordering against a deadline, order early rather than fast.
